Water Smart - Water Efficiency Tips

If you are wondering "Do I need to water?"  An easy test  - walk across the lawn - If footprints spring back quickly do not water.

 Grass on Slopes

  • Creates almost immediate run-off
  • Uses 3-5 times as much water as a flat surface
  • Could create fugitive water fines
  • Could cause conservation surcharges

Suggestion:  Remove grass from slopes and replace it with xeriscape and drip system.

Grass in Narrow or Small Areas (less than 10’ wide)

  • Can’t be watered efficiently
  • Is usually only ornamental in nature and not functional turf
  • Similar problems to grass on slopes – run-off, fugitive water fines, and conservation surcharges
  • Problem areas often include between the sidewalk and the street, along the side of a house or building or long the side of the driveway

Suggestion:  Replace with plants that only need drip irrigation.

 Ornamental Versus Useful Lawn Areas

  • More families are deciding to have only one lawn – usually in the back – for kids, dogs, etc.  The more ornamental yard is replaced with xeriscape/mulch, and a drip system.
